Perfect-Season Odds Calculator
From the touchline, 38-0 looks simple: just win every week. It isn't. A perfect season only stands if you win every match — and in football a dropped point is usually a draw, not a defeat, so the bar is far higher than going unbeaten. Set how strong a favourite your side is each match, and this tool shows the odds of winning the lot — plus the math, so you can see exactly why perfection is mythical.
Read this as the chance you actually win a given match — three points, not one. Even a dominant side rarely clears ~85%: Manchester City's record-breaking 2017–18 won 32 of 38, about 84% a week, and still drew four times. A draw counts as a non-win here.
The math, in one line
If your side wins each match with probability p, and you treat the matches as independent, the chance of winning all 38 is simply:
P(perfect) = p38
That exponent is the whole story. Because you multiply a number below 1 by itself 38 times, the result collapses fast. To have even a coin-flip (50%) shot at a perfect 38-0 season, you would need to be a 98.2% favourite to win every single match — a level no side in football history has ever sustained across a full campaign.
Why a draw is the killer
This is the football-specific twist most people miss. An unbeaten run only asks you to avoid losing, and a draw isn't a loss — Arsenal's 2003–04 Invincibles went the whole 38 unbeaten yet drew 12 and won only 26. A perfect run asks you to actively win, so a draw ends it just as surely as a defeat. In a sport where roughly a quarter of matches finish level, that extra requirement is enormous: the p in the formula above is your win rate, not your don't-lose rate, and that is why the number in the box drops off a cliff. See unbeaten vs perfect for the full distinction.
Sensitivity table
How the perfect-season odds change with your per-match win rate, over a full 38-match league season:
| Win probability per match | Chance of 38-0 | Odds |
|---|---|---|
| 60% | 3.7e-7% | 1 in 2.7 × 10^8 |
| 70% | 1.3e-4% | 1 in 769,617 |
| 75% | 0.002% | 1 in 55,933 |
| 80% | 0.021% | 1 in 4,815 |
| 85% | 0.208% | 1 in 481 |
| 90% | 1.8% | 1 in 55 |
| 95% | 14.2% | 1 in 7.0 |
| 98% | 46.4% | 1 in 2.2 |
| 99% | 68.3% | 1 in 1.5 |
Why the real odds are even longer
This calculator assumes a constant win probability and independent matches. Real football breaks both assumptions, and every way it breaks them makes perfection harder: fatigue and injuries erode you as the season wears on, a perfect record paints a target on your back, and one stubborn low block or an inspired afternoon from an opposition keeper can settle for a point you can't afford to drop. The in-game engine on 38-0 models those forces — and the draw — directly. Read the full methodology to see how, then take your own XI for a run.
