Every Unbeaten Top-Flight Season on Record

Going a whole league season without losing is one of football’s rarest feats. Only a small number of clubs have ever done it at the top level of a major nation. But look closely at each of them and you’ll see the same thing: draws. Every unbeaten season in history still fell short of a perfect one.

Here are the most notable unbeaten top-flight campaigns.

England

• Preston North End, 1888–89 — the original “Invincibles.” Won the very first Football League title unbeaten (18 wins, 4 draws in a 22-game season) and completed the double without conceding a goal in the FA Cup.
• Arsenal, 2003–04 — the only unbeaten 38-game season in English history: 26 wins, 12 draws, 0 losses. See our full guide to the Invincibles.

Italy

• AC Milan, 1991–92 — unbeaten Serie A champions (22 wins, 12 draws in a 34-game season), the start of a 58-match unbeaten league run under Fabio Capello.
• Juventus, 2011–12 — Antonio Conte’s first title, unbeaten across 38 games but with 15 draws (23 wins, 15 draws).

Germany

• Bayer Leverkusen, 2023–24 — the first unbeaten Bundesliga season in the league’s history, under Xabi Alonso (28 wins, 6 draws in 34 games), a club long nicknamed “Neverkusen” for its near-misses.

Elsewhere

Unbeaten league seasons have also been recorded in Scotland (Celtic and Rangers sides of various eras), Portugal (Benfica, Porto), the Netherlands, and other nations — often in leagues shorter than 38 games. Real Madrid went unbeaten to win La Liga in 1931–32, in an 18-game season.

The common thread: draws

Line up every one of these seasons and the pattern is unmistakable. The fewest draws by any famous 38-game unbeaten side was Arsenal’s 12. Most unbeaten champions drew even more. Not one of them came within touching distance of winning every match.
